However, it would seem that some movement might help, so the flare up is not quite as tender to the touch. Berberis vulgaris is for a pain that is all over the body rather than completely localized to one part of the body. It helps when motions and walking are painful, and the body as a whole needs some relief.

Though it is possible to find and try these things yourself, it is always a good idea to seek out someone who is licensed in homeopathic medicine to assist you find relief. They have the benefit of knowing the history of this practice that goes back in time almost 2000 years. 5 Nutritious Add-Ins for Your Crohns Recipes

Crohns recipes can play an important role in preventing Crohn’s symptoms or flare ups, regardless if a person suffers from Crohn’s ileitis or another form.  It is no secret that the food a person ingests can have positive or negative affects on their digestive system and gastrointestinal tract. 

However, just because a person with Crohn’s has to watch what they eat, and omit various food products from their diet, doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the foods they eat.  The following are five foods that are generally considered safe for a Crohns recipes diet and can provide extra nutrition and/or flavour.

1. Honey – Honey is a natural sweetener that has healing properties.  It is a good source of antioxidants and is ideal for treating diarrhea, as it encourages rehydration in the body and soothes the stomach.  In addition, honey has free sugar molecules which actually improves brain function and reduces fatigue.

It is imperative that you purchase local raw honey to ensure you are receiving all of its nutrients and enzymes in your crohns recipes.  The best place to look for this honey is in health stores.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Extra virgin olive oil is vegetable based and an excellent addition to crohns recipes.   This oil helps to protect your intestines as it contains potent antioxidants.  Olive oil also increases the body’s absorption of a number of vitamins including A, D, E, and K.  Furthermore, it encourages faster healing and increases metabolism.

Recipe tips: Olive oil is a flavor enhancer and is a fantastic alternative to margarine or butter for recipes and as condiment.  For instance, you can use it as a salad dressing. 

5. Essential Fatty Acid Foods – Be sure to spice up your recipes with foods that are high in essential fatty acids, as they are known to prevent inflammation within the bowel.  Good sources of such foods include dark green leafy vegetables, rapeseed, walnuts and flaxseed.

Vitamin C and Acid Reflux Syndrome Reason for Moderation

Vitamin C affects acid reflux in two different manners. One way is direct, and the other is in a very roundabout way. Many things that are well known for having vitamin C in them are trigger foods for acid flare-ups and the subsequent heartburn. These include many citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, pineapple, and lemons. They are highly acidic, and they also trigger the stomach to produce more acid. Vitamin C is vital for good health, but when the acid production is stimulated by these foods, you have to find alternatives, or you have to take a supplement.

Vitamin C is essential for many reasons. The most well known benefit of vitamin C is that it helps the body fight off colds. It is also a key part of collagen production. Collagen is an essential part of healthy skin, blood vessels, and joint tissues. It is also needed for repair. When you suffer a wound of any type, vitamin C races to the site to help heal. It is also important for the strength and growth of bones and teeth. However, many who find that citrus and vitamin C aggravates or stimulates stomach acid production will avoid the foods, and thus, problems start to appear.

When you notice that you are not getting enough vitamin C, you might be tempted to take a supplement. This is something you should discuss with your doctor before you begin. Though you can get some from supplements, they can cause problems. If you are taking too much, your body must work overtime to get rid of the excess. This can lead to liver damage over time. However, if it does bother you, as it does many others, you should try to have some of the following each day and even each meal. You can try papaya, strawberries, bell peppers, brussel sprouts, broccoli, kale, cantaloupe, and kiwi. Some may exacerbate symptoms but you may find you can get what you need from some of them. Tomatoes are a great source, but they tend to aggravate acid reflux.

If you are concerned about your vitamin C intake, you can talk to your doctor. Remember that a supplement might actually do more harm than good if you have acid reflux syndrome, and many doctors will not suggest taking vitamin C as a supplement. If your doctor recommends the supplement, taking them in small doses in the middle of meals might help reduce excess acid production. Keep track of what foods you are eating and how many supplements you might be taking. Remember that the body does not store vitamin C, so you should find out what your body needs each day, and make sure you are getting it from the foods that are easily tolerated by your system.

Is Hypercalcemia The Cause Of Your Heartburn?

There are many different reasons why people develop heartburn or the condition known as acid reflux syndrome. The most common cause of heartburn is because the muscular valve that closes between the stomach and the esophagus does not close properly, and the acid can then move up in to the throat and mouth, leaving pain and damage along the way.

However, there may be a link to Hypercalcemia, and if you have this, you may find that this is the cause of heartburn, and might be part of the reason why already existing reflux acts up for you so much.

Hypercalcemia is basically an excess of calcium in the body or blood stream. Many think you should get as much calcium as you can, but there are times when the body retains too much, and there are problems that can result from this. It usually points to something else going on in the body.

Some of the symptoms of this condition are varied, but might include tiredness, mental fog or confusion, upset stomach (vomiting and nausea), increased need to urinate, some constipation, depression, and in some cases, muscle weakness, and renal stones. This can also produce an abnormal heart rate or rhythm.

This condition is usually the result of something else. It can happen as a symptom of hyperthyroidism. This is when the thyroid works too well and the body loses mass very rapidly. It might also be a side symptom that happens with cancer or Paget’s disease. This will be diagnosed with a blood test that gives an accurate calcium level, and an EKG might be needed to test for abnormal heart rhythms. Treatment tends to happen when the underlying condition is treated.

The problems with heartburn and Hypercalcemia seem to be two fold.

One problem is that calcium is an ingredient in many of the over-the-counter heartburn medications. This can lead a person with severe acid reflux symptoms to take in too much calcium each day. On the flip side, this condition can actually lead to increased acid production in many who have GERD already, or those who have never had a problem. In turn, a person might take more OTC medications, and the problem would then compound. This is why it is important to watch for symptoms and see a doctor if Hypercalcemia is suspected. It is important to note that the acid reflux medication alone will not cause this condition in most people, but rather, it might aggravate it in those who already have it for any of the known underlying causes.

A doctor will have to do the appropriate tests to find out why the Hypercalcemia is there, and the underlying medical condition must be addressed in order to get it under control.

If a person finds out that this is the cause of heartburn for them, they will need to seek treatment for the condition causing Hypercalcemia, and then must find something to take for GERD that does not have calcium in it. That might not clear up the problem, but that might stop some of the excess acid production associated with this. Once the underlying cause of the excess calcium can be found the acid production can go down, though that does not mean it won’t go away entirely.

Proton Pump Inhibitors for Acid Reflux Syndrome. Are They For You?

There are many ways to treat acid reflux syndrome, and one of the things you might hear about the most are proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s). These are the most commonly advertised types of medications, and they come in both OTC (over-the-counter) and prescription strength. These are really great for those who have a lot of problems with their reflux recurring day in and day out. However, they might not be needed for everyone all of the time. You should talk to your doctor about how often you have pain, and what they think would be the best for you.

Proton pump inhibitors do more than just help soothe pain. They do something to reduce the pain and keep the levels of acid down in the stomach. These medications will actually stop many of the acid pumps in the stomach from producing acid.

The idea is if you have less acid production in your stomach, you won’t have the problem of the acid backing up into the esophagus. When this happens, the damage from acid reflux has time to heal. PPI’s can also be used for people who have ulcers in their stomachs.

Those who have had damage to the esophagus might have to take a prescription proton pump inhibitor to give the tissues time to heal. These are prescribed by a doctor, and they will need to be taken anywhere from two weeks to two months.

Because the amounts of acid are reduced, you will feel relief from your bouts of heartburn, and all tissues have breathing room to heal as they should. After the prescription has run out, you can probably take the OTC version of proton pump inhibitor. They aren’t as strong, but if the tissues have healed, you don’t need the prescription strength any longer.

There are some side effects with proton pump inhibitors that you do have to watch out for. If something is giving you problems, you may have to try a different medication. The goods news about this is that there are many different PPI type medications that you can try until you find something that does not bother you.

Some of the most common side effects are diarrhea, gas, and upset stomach. Occassionally people report experiencing dry mouth and headache. These are pretty rare though, and most won’t have problems with them.

Make sure you talk about all of your symptoms with your doctor so they can recommend the best medication for your acid reflux syndrome. If you are taking any other type of medication, either OTC or prescriptions, ask about drug interactions to be sure you will be safe.

You should be sure to let them know if you are pregnant, nursing, or have kidney problems. They may want to give you something else any of those are true for you. Also ask if there is anything else you can do to help your acid reflux syndrome. They might give you a food list, or recommend stress reduction to help with healing and to offer more relief.

Creating Your Personal Acid Reflux Recipe Book

Acid reflux is a reality for many, and there are many reasons why it might happen. Though stress can be a problem, often the foods and drinks that people choose are the biggest triggers. Things like alcohol, soda, spicy foods, fatty foods, and come citrus can bring on a world of pain for some. Some who have GERD like to put together an acid reflux recipe book to keep track of the foods that don’t bother them. Having such a book will make it easier for anyone with this condition to eat the right foods more often.

Before you begin compiling recipes, you should think about how you are going to store them. You print can them out or write them down, but you may not be able to keep track of them that way. That means you probably aren’t going to use them because you can‘t find them. A simple three ring binder is always a great idea, or you can use a box with index cards. These will keep all of your acid reflux recipes in one place.

When it comes to recipes, you might want to consider laminating the pages. This is extra work and an extra expense, but regular paper gets ruined very easily when in the kitchen. Laminating will help keep your recipes safe from grease, and they can be wiped off easily if something were to spill.

Finding recipes might be a matter of trial and error, but the there are tons to be found online. A simple search can dig up hundreds. You have to decide what you think sounds good. You can print them out and put them in your binder, or you can write them out on your index cards.

You should start with things that you know you would like, and then slowly add new things you would like to try. GERD sufferers should make sure their recipes are well balanced with proteins and carbs, and should be low fat most of the time. Keep that in mind as your browse online. Don’t forget that you can also find great recipes by asking your doctor for recommendations.

You can also find recipes by tweaking some of your favorite recipes that give you problems. You can also write them from scratch if you pay attention to what you can eat, and what is known to give you problems.

Things you should avoid would be citrus fruits, milk products (if you suffer from lactose intolerance), spicy foods, many sweets, fatty meats (buy lean cuts), and many forms of white potato. Though taking the hot spices out of foods might sound like it makes for a bland diet, there are plenty of great herbs and seasonings that won’t aggravate acid reflux.

It might take you a while to come up with your own collection, but if you add a few new ones a week, your acid reflux recipe book will grow rather quickly. Though some of the foods that should be avoided bother many, they may not bother you. That is what will make your recipe book unique. If you don’t have problems with spicy foods, then by all means include them.

There are no hard and fast rules for all people who have GERD. Even more important than what you eat is how you eat. Remember to eat smaller and more frequent meals, and keep servings small so your meals are not sitting in your stomach. That might be one of the biggest things to avoid.

How Does Menopause Affect IBS?

Did you know that women are more likely to develop IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) than men? It’s true, and many believe this is because of the different hormones that the female body produces throughout the monthly menstrual cycle. So what happens when menopause begins?

Once this period of life begins, the hormones that are produced by the body change, and so will the problems you have with IBS and the related symptoms. If you consider the way hormones work through a woman’s fertile years, you might understand how the hormonal changes of menopause affect IBS.

Irritable bowel affects up to fifteen percent of the population of the United States, and it is estimated that 70-75 percent of patients are female. Those with this condition suffer from bouts of cramping, bloating, and diarrhea or constipation. This is something that is usually diagnosed before age 50, and some go through life dealing with it, but not realizing that they have a medical condition. There is no real cure for IBS, but there are a number of lifestyle changes and medications that seem to help some patients.

The symptoms and flare ups of IBS tend to be worse for all women when they are having their period. Fluctuating hormones seem to be the culprit, with the rise in progesterone during this time being one of the more influential triggers. This means that a woman with IBS will have far more trouble symptoms and bouts of bloating, diarrhea, and cramping. Because of this, not only do more women get IBS than men, it also means that they are going to have a harder time dealing with it.

Pregnancy can bring about a whole new set of problems for those women with IBS as well. Pregnancy will do many things to a women’s body, and what will happen with IBS seems to be different for every women. Hormones start raging through the body, and many of these are the same or are much like the ones related to menses. For some women, their IBS is much more under control while they are expecting, and for others, the opposite is true.

The good news is that the hormones that are associated with IBS flare-ups will subside substantially when menopause happens. Women with IBS can expect they will begin to feel much better, and their symptoms will be more comparable to men with the condition. Women with IBS generally begin to feel better around age 50 to 55, depending on when they go through menopause. They may notice a sudden improvement when menopause begins, or it may take a while for symptoms to slow down. It is important to remember that while going through menopause, the fluctuations of hormones can be dramatic. This might make IBS worse for a time, but it should pass. Either way, this is a time when a woman can expect to gain some relief from her IBS symptoms at least.

Endometriosis And Interstitial Cystitis

Endometriosis and interstitial cystitis (IC) have similar symptoms, making it easy for one to be mistaken for the other.  In fact, sometimes women who have endometriosis and undergo a hysterectomy mistaken the pain they experience in their pelvic region following the procedure as a return of their endometriosis, when in actuality it could be caused by interstitial cystitis.

What is interstitial cystitis?  Interstitial cystitis (pronounced “In-ter-stish-ul       sis-ty-tis”), also known as Painful Bladder Syndrome, is a chronic medical condition that is characterized by inflammation of the bladder.  This inflammation is believed to occur when the mucous layer inside the bladder is damaged.  The damaged mucous layer lets irritating substances, especially urine, come in direct contact with the bladder wall.  These substances aggravate the bladder, resulting in inflammation and pain.

It is obvious by the above characteristics of IC that endometriosis and interstitial cystitis are clearly not the same condition, and, therefore, require different treatment.  Unfortunately, diagnosis isn’t as easy as one would think because the symptoms of IC closely mirror endometriosis, as the following will illustrate:

Endometriosis symptoms-
• Pelvic pain
• Pain in lower back
• Painful menses - pain before and/or during and/or after menstruation
• Severe menstrual cramping
• Pain during intercourse
• Pain during orgasm
• Heavy menses
• Irregular menses
• Painful bowel movements usually accompanied by an alteration between constipation and diarrhea
• Gastrointestinal upset including bloating, nausea and vomiting
• Bladder pain
• Frequent need to urinate
• Fatigue

Interstitial cystitis symptoms -
• Pelvic pain
• Pain in lower back
• Pain during intercourse
• Pain after intercourse
• Painful menses
• Heavy menses
• Painful bowel movement during menses
• Slight discomfort, tenderness, pressure or pain in the bladder or pelvic area
• Urgent need to urinate
• Frequent need to urinate
• Fatigue

The above symptoms that have been italicised for endometriosis and interstitial cystitis are the same.  Although some symptoms differ, you can see how many symptoms are similar between the two.  Thus is why IC has been nicknamed endometriosis “evil twin”.

To make matters even worse for some women, it isn’t uncommon for a woman to suffer from both endometriosis and IC.  In fact, one study involving 60 women found that more than 79% of these women had both interstitial cystitis and endometriosis at the same time.  In some cases, this is often why women still experience pain after they have endometrial tissue removed or why some find their endometriosis hard to treat.  The pain they are experiencing is similar to endometriosis but is actually caused by IC.

Therefore, if you have endometriosis and continue to have pain despite the treatments you’ve tried, perhaps it’s time to ask your doctor to further investigate your pain to find out if endometriosis is actually the cause of your problem, or if it’s something else like interstitial cystitis. 

If you suspect your may have endometriosis and interstitial cystitis you need to tell your doctor about your suspicions.  However, before you jump to conclusions, and before you attend your appointment, it’s a good idea to make a record of the symptoms you are experiencing.  Write down the symptoms you experience in one week and present these symptoms to your doctor so he/she can help provide you with better tests for a more effective diagnosis and treatment course.

Keep in mind, if you suspect you have IC the symptoms you need to focus on include:
• Urgency and frequency of urination
• Fluctuation of pain as the bladder empties or fills
• Pelvic or bladder pain that intensifies during menstruation

In addition, if you want an accurate IC diagnosis you may want to request that your doctor refer you to a gynaecologist or urologist.  Finally, remember that while both endometriosis and interstitial cystitis are chronic conditions, they are treatable when effectively diagnosed.
